Genetic Counselling consults involve meeting with a Mount Sinai Services genetic counsellor to discuss your personal or family health history, genetic risks, genetic testing options or results. Mount Sinai Services currently offers genetic counselling consults for a variety of indications. 

At this time, all consults are being delivered by phone or videoconferencing. In-person appointments are not being scheduled.

How To Access Our Services 

To schedule an appointment, please have your primary care provider (i.e. family doctor, nurse practitioner) refer you. We do not have a specific referral form. Referrals can be faxed to (416) 586-8589 with attention to Mount Sinai Services Genetic Counselling. Consult summary letters will be faxed to the referring physician ONLY if a return fax number is provided on the referral.

A staff member will contact the client within 72 hours of receiving the referral to schedule the appointment. 

Types of Appointments

Personalized PowerPoint slides and a summary letter are included for all appointment types.

Preconception Expanded Carrier Screening Consult - $225

This consult is only available to clients referred from fertility clinics.

  • A detailed review of the benefits, limitations and risks of expanded carrier screening.
  • Review carrier screening options to support your selection of the most appropriate test for you and your partner.
  • Includes a medical and family history genetics assessment with a focus on impacts for future children and a review of prenatal screening options.
  • Counselling for screening results is included at no additional cost within 1 year of receiving the results. The client should re-contact the genetic counsellor when results become available to arrange this service.
  • Length of appointment: 45 minutes

Direct to Consumer (DTC) Genetic Testing - $250

DTC combo (pre- and post-test counselling) - $385

  • Discussion about DTC genetic testing with a focus on your major interest or concern.
  • Include a medical and family history genetics assessment.
  • Pre-test counselling consults will review the benefits, limitations, and risks of DTC genetic testing and available test options.
  • Post-test counselling consults focus on your test results and how they may impact you and your family members, including recommended referrals. 
  • Length of appointment: 60 minutes

Hereditary Cancer Assessment - $250

  • Includes a targeted medical and family history genetics assessment for hereditary cancer.
  • Discussion of your personal or family history of cancer, the likelihood of a hereditary cause and the impact this may have to you and your family members.
  • Review available genetic testing options including the benefits, risks and limitations of genetic testing. If any previous genetic testing related to cancer was done, results can be discussed.
  • Relevant guideline recommendations may be offered if available. 
  • Length of appointment: 60 minutes

Psychiatric Genetics Assessment - $250

  • Includes a targeted medical and family history genetics assessment for psychiatric illness.
  • Discussion of your risk assessment and the meaning for you and your family members. 
  • Review available genetic testing options including the benefits, risks and limitations of genetic testing. If any previous psychiatric genetic testing was done, results can be discussed.
  • Relevant guideline recommendations may be offered if available. 
  • Length of appointment: 60 minutes

Comprehensive Genetics Assessment - $325

  • Includes a comprehensive medical and family history genetics assessment for hereditary cancer, psychiatric, neurodevelopmental, skeletomuscular, cardiac, and sensory (vision & hearing) disorders.
  • Review of available genetic testing options including the benefits, risks and limitations of genetic testing.
  • Discussion of any identified genetic risks and the potential impacts for you and your family members.
  • Relevant guideline recommendations may be offered if available.
  • Length of appointment: 90 minutes

This consult type is done in two appointments. The first appointment will be the personal and family history intake and identification of your major concerns or interests. The second appointment will involve a discussion of the results of your genetics assessment and other counselling topics described above. 

Preconception General Consult - $325

  • Includes a comprehensive medical and family history genetics assessment for hereditary cancer, psychiatric, neurodevelopmental, skeletomuscular, cardiac, and sensory (vision, hearing) disorders with a focus on risks for future children.
  • Genetics assessment of any previous pregnancy losses and discussion of appropriate genetic testing options to investigate potential genetic causes.
  • Review the option for expanded carrier screening, including the benefits, risks and limitations. Any previous expanded carrier screening results can also be discussed.
  • Preconception guideline recommendations and prenatal screening options will also be 
  • Length of appointment: 90 minutes

This consult type is done in two appointments. The first appointment will be the personal and family history intake and identification of your major concerns or interests. The second appointment will involve a discussion of the results of your genetics assessment and other counselling topics described above. 

In Vitro Fertilization Genetics Preconception Consult Combo - $385

Pre-test counselling OR post-test counselling ONLY $300

Pre-test counselling consults

  • Includes a medical and family history genetics assessment with a focus on risks for future children and, if applicable, possible genetic investigations for causes of infertility.
  • Discussion may include the benefits, limitations, and risks of preimplantation genetic testing, a comprehensive egg/sperm donor genetics risk evaluation or discussion of a previously completed donor genetics risk evaluation (records required)*.
  • Please note only one indication will be reviewed per consult.
  • Length of appointment: 60 minutes

*Includes donors from outside of Ontario and Canada who are using surrogates in Ontario.

Post-test counselling consults

  • Includes a review of any previous genetic testing or genetics assessments with a focus on their impact for future IVF cycles and pregnancies.
  • Discussion may include guideline recommendations for embryo selection or assistance with egg/sperm donor selection.
  • May include a medical and family history genetics assessment depending on the indication.
  • Length of appointment: 45 minutes

Mosaic Embryo Assessment - $300

If post-test counselling after initial IVF Genetics Preconception Consult $250

  • This is a specialized consult for the assessment of mosaic embryo(s).
  • Includes a detailed discussion of the preimplantation genetic testing results, possible pregnancy outcomes if the mosaic embryo(s) is used in an embryo transfer and any professional guideline recommendations. 
  • Length of appointment: 60 minutes
